Running On Empty

caregiver burnout caregiver stress caregiver support May 21, 2026

There’s a moment many caregivers reach... It’s usually not dramatic. It’s quiet.

You realize you’re tired in a way that rest doesn’t fully fix.

You’re still showing up.
Still doing what needs to be done.

But something feels different.

Your patience is thinner.
Your energy is lower.
Your capacity feels stretched.

And somewhere inside yourself… you begin wondering: How long can I keep going like this?

Not because you don’t love the person you’re caring for.
Not because you’re failing. But, because caregiving requires continuous output.

Attention.
Decision-making.
Emotional steadiness.
Adaptation.

And when that output goes on for long enough without enough restoration…
The body begins to feel it.
The nervous system begins to feel it.

Usually slowly.
Gradually.
Over time.

This moment matters.

Not because something has gone wrong…
but because something inside you is asking for attention too.

Not just the care you’re giving.
The support you’re receiving.

And sometimes the shift doesn’t need to begin with something big.

Sometimes it starts smaller than that.

A moment of rest.
Letting something be simpler.
Asking for more support.
Releasing the expectation that you have to hold everything perfectly.

Because sustaining caregiving…
requires sustaining yourself too.

And sometimes simply noticing you’re running on empty… is the beginning of caring for yourself differently.
