Dementia Behavior Changes: Why It Feels So Personal (Even When It Isn’t)

behavior brain health communication relationships Nov 12, 2025

There are moments in caregiving that land harder than others.

A sharp tone.
A look that feels unfamiliar.
A response that feels… dismissive, or even hurtful.

And before you can even think about it, your body reacts.

Why are they talking to me like that?
Did I do something wrong?
This isn’t who they are…

It feels personal.

This is someone you love. Someone you’ve known deeply. Someone you have expectations for.

So you must remember... something important is happening underneath these moments.

Their brain is changing.

Which means:

  • their ability to think and process information is changing
  • their ability to regulate sensation and emotion is changing
  • their ability to respond to me in familiar ways is changing

And when those systems are disrupted…
Responses can come out sharper, shorter, or more confusing than they intend.

What you’re feeling is real. But what you’re interpreting may not be.

This is one of the hardest shifts in caring for someone you love:

Learning to separate what it feels like from what is actually happening between you.

If you allow every moment to feel personal…

You will carry more hurt than you need to, maybe even react from that hurt, and the space between you will feel heavier, faster.

When you can begin to see:

This presenting pain isn’t really about me…

It's about their illness, what’s happening in their brain…that's affecting us both

Something softens.

You don’t have to take on every moment, every experience of conflict or confusion.

You can hold steady.
Stay present for yourself.

Because taking care of your feelings first will help you become more able to respond instead of react.

This doesn’t mean it won’t still sting sometimes.

It will.

But it gives you space.

Space to pause. Space to breathe. Space to choose.
