The Power of A Next Step
Apr 16, 2026
Caregiving can feel like a lot.
Not just physically… but mentally.
There are always multiple things to think about.
What needs to happen.
What might happen next.
What you’re trying to prevent, manage, or stay ahead of.
And in the middle of all of that… It’s easy to start thinking in big pictures.
We need to get ready.
We have to leave soon.
This whole process needs to happen.
But for someone whose brain is changing, big pictures can feel overwhelming.
Not because they don’t want to participate… But because they can’t organize all the steps at once.
This is where something very simple becomes powerful.
Instead of focusing on everything, you focus on one step. For example:
“Stand up.”
“Let’s put your shoes on.”
“Come with me.”
One clear action. Nothing extra.
And once that step is done, you offer the next.
This does two things:
- It reduces overwhelm for them.
- And it creates clarity for you.
Because instead of managing everything at once…
You’re simply guiding the next moment.
And often…
That’s enough to move things forward.
