Caring for the Caregiver

communication family dynamics maintaining independence Aug 20, 2026

There's a unique role that often goes unseen.

You're not the primary caregiver, but you're not outside of the caregiving journey either.

You're watching one parent care for the other, and you're noticing things… The exhaustion, the worry, the appointments, the interrupted sleep, the emotional weight that seems to grow a little heavier each day.

You want to help but you may not know how.

You don't want to overstep.

You don't want your parent to feel like you're taking away their independence, but at the same time, you can see they're carrying more than anyone should have to carry alone.

This requires a different kind of presence.

Not taking over, but coming alongside.

Offering support before it's requested, listening without immediately trying to fix, looking for small ways to lighten the load—a meal, an afternoon of respite, a ride to an appointment, or simply someone to talk to.

Sometimes the greatest gift isn't solving the problem… It's making sure the caregiver knows they don't have to carry it alone.

Caregiving was never meant to be a one-person job. The journey is simply too long, too emotional and too demanding. Supporting the caregiver is one of the most meaningful ways you can support the person living with dementia. Because when caregivers feel supported… They're often able to care with greater patience, resilience, and peace.

If you're watching a parent care for a spouse with dementia, don't underestimate the difference your presence can make.

You don't have to have all the answers, sometimes showing up with a listening ear, a helping hand, or a simple "How are you doing?" can be exactly what they need.

Caregivers spend so much time making sure everyone else is okay.

Sometimes the greatest gift is reminding them that they matter too.
