Are You Where You Want to Be?

caregiver support caregiving tips self-care Sep 13, 2021

Did you know that most goldfish will experience stunted growth or even die if they don't have enough space to grow?

So, where are we going with this?

As much as we love goldfish, this is not a Public Service Announcement for the little swimmers.

It is, however, a wonderful metaphor for human beings and change.

If you don't give yourself the space and attention to evolve in response to life's challenges, you might get by, but you will not thrive.

This is especially true for people who are caregiving.

Caregivers almost always resist their own needs in the face of change.

And, just like goldfish, they become stunted in their "small bowls".

In fact, studies show that 65% of primary caregivers have a major health crisis of their own or die before their loved one does.

We believe Deborah Day says it best...

"Recognizing that you are not where you want to be is a starting point to begin changing your life."

Whether you are a caregiver or not, think about your own life for a minute.

Are you who you want to be?

Are you happy with your current circumstances?

Do you like the way you feel?

If you answered no to any of these questions...it's time to make a change.

While change is uncomfortable, you will be surprised at how quickly you can adapt and grow.

If you resist making necessary changes and choose to stay in your comfortable and familiar "small bowl"...

You will remain at the mercy of life's intensity and the emotional drama of your feelings.

Is it time for a "bigger bowl"?

If it is...take the leap.

Happy swimming!
